Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

2 Corinthians 3:17

Have you ever found yourself in an emotional or mental state of trying to keep things on an even keel?  Is there an “other” in your life who exhibits out-of-control behavior?  Someone who carelessly “rocks the boat”?  Someone who leaves a trail of confusion, bewilderment, and dread in his or her wake?

Albert Einstein once said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”  The more current version of the statement: Insanity is doing the same thing the same way, expecting a different result.

But Step 3 of the Twelve Steps says that we, “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.”

Trying to keep that boat from capsizing is a trap, and it’s exhausting. Begging, pleading, cajoling — plotting! — to “make” the “other” change will yield the same result each time:  more of the same behavior.  Permitting yourself to experience the freedom of the Spirit to work through circumstances may mean allowing the boat to overturn so the “other” in your life can realize the consequences of their actions.

Surrender control and find freedom!
