Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
The path was easy until we arrived at the timber line. Now, with no shade, the sun beat down on us. The gravel we began on had become large rocks and boulders, sometimes big enough that we had to hop up to sit, then stand up to keep hiking. The burning in our throats increased with the rise in elevation. The air became thinner as we approached the 14,000-foot summit.
The climb up the 14-er in Colorado was testing us. Hard. We hadn’t had enough time to acclimate to the altitude. At one of our frequent stops to catch our breath, we joked about each of us chipping in to pay the $500 it would cost to have someone come and rescue us.
Have you ever found yourself at a place in life where the going was so hard that you needed to catch your breath? you wanted to give up? you wanted someone to step in and rescue you?
We looked ahead and chose the next landmark where we would stop and rest a few moments before going on. We repeated the process over and over. With one mile to the summit, someone on the trail appeared and shared water. We continued and soon arrived at the top. And — oh, what a view! It was the most breathtakingly gorgeous scene I had ever laid eyes on! 360 degrees of mountains, lakes, rivers, and trees! The full picture.
Looking back below, snaking back and forth up the mountainside was the path we had hiked. The stunning vastness of God’s creation swallowed up the narrow trail. It seemed so insignificant compared to the view now. What a reward we received for enduring!
Never give up. Stop and rest, but never, never, never give up! There is a view beyond compare at the end of the journey!
