“God has the ability to speak to those who believe in Him, even if is not through an audible voice.” -Reverend Billy Graham.
What do these things have in common?
A talking donkey,
A burning bush, and
These are some of the tools God used to speak to His people. The same is true today but I don’t think we’re going to see or hear a talking donkey; but I’m hopeful. It could happen. Anything is possible with God. God captures our attention in many ways. He uses other believers, our circumstances, music, prayer, and nature, just to name a few. But not all God’s children hear His voice in the same way. Job 33:14 says, For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it.
To hear God’s voice, we need to be in tune with His voice. Just like a child in the womb hears the sound of his mother’s voice. That’s what God wants from us. He doesn’t want us to be deceived by the voice of Satan. As God’s children, we can learn to recognize our Heavenly Father’s voice. His voice will never contradict His word.
Have you ever wondered what God’s voice sounds like? If God were to speak to me personally, I imagine it would sound like Morgan Freeman’s voice from the movie Bruce Almighty or Evan Almighty. I haven’t heard Morgan Freeman speak to me or even an audible voice from God, but I have heard a voice in my head that I understood clearly as if they were standing in front of me.
I remember a time when I was praying for answers. I prayed day after day. Eventually, I had forgotten about my prayer, and one night while I was at work running the vacuum cleaner, I heard this voice as loud and clear in my head that gave me an answer to my prayer. I will never forget that night because it reminded me that God hears our prayers and He answers prayers in a moment that we least expect it.
Sometimes God answers faster than we expect. I’ve seen His answer in response to my complaining about taking what I thought was a long way around and getting up earlier than usual. God showed me the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen. I felt God had painted it just for me to remind me He is in control and all I have to do is trust Him.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. -John 10:27-28
As believers, we should never be too busy to hear from God. Our hectic schedules and demands of every day can be overwhelming, causing us to take our focus off what really matters — hearing from God. But we are blessed to serve a God who would leave His flock to find us when we stray.
