Breath Day – March 17, 2018

Then everyone deserted him and fled. Mark 14:50

The disciples had vowed never to leave Jesus. Just a few hours later, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus stood alone, betrayed and deserted.

Have you ever been deserted? abandoned? rejected? In her book Black Swan, Susan Anderson paints an agonizing portrait of abandonment. A young child takes a walk with her daddy into the woods. They come upon a log that leads them across water to an island. The daddy picks up the little girl and places her on top of a gigantic rock. “You stay here,” he says, “and I’ll go pick us some huckleberries for lunch.” With no way down off the rock, she waits in seclusion and isolation.

He never returns.

Have you ever been placed high atop a rock, abandoned by someone you loved and trusted? You share in the suffering of Jesus. He knows the deep pain of abandonment by those closest to Him. In Psalm 27, David wrote, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me,” and, “For in the day of trouble he will … set me high upon a rock.”

The truth from God is that you are lovely and beautiful to Him. He will never reject or abandon you, nor leave or forsake you.

God is the Rock.
