I Am Known

God Says I Am Known - Amber Edwards - Breath on Paper Blog

Let me ask you something? How many times have you gone to a concert, watched a movie, attended a major sporting event or been anywhere in the presence of a true celebrity and thought, “I sure wish I was famous, that everyone knew me just by seeing my face or hearing my name”? Anyone saying “yes” right now or raising your hand? Yeah, me too!

For me, this kind of thinking started as early as my carefree days in the K4 class at Ridgecrest Baptist. Kindergarten wasn’t real school, so we didn’t have “assignments” per se, but we did LOTS of coloring projects! One of these projects I remember so vividly. The teacher gave each student two coloring sheets … one had three ducks on it and the other a pond. The assignment was first color the pond, then color the ducks, cut them out and paste them on the pond. As my classmates began gluing their ducks FLAT on their ponds, I thought to myself, here’s my chance to be noticed. How can I stand out? Well for starters, their ducks, which they’d pasted flat on their pond sheet, were hardly floating.  They looked more like they were drowning! I quickly came up with the idea of folding a small crease at the bottom of each duck and pasting ONLY that part to the pond. The result? My ducks were actually floating on the pond! Yes, I was a control freak even then, but the teacher thought it was brilliant, and thus began my desire be known.

This desire came from a place deep inside me where there was a hole that I never could seem to fill.

My parents divorced when I was just a toddler and my father wasn’t exactly active in my life as he lived in a different state and had another family. I longed to have the daddy/daughter relationship so many of my friends experienced and that seemed to be present in every movie and TV show I watched. Sadly, this longing was never fulfilled. High school came and I so deeply desired to be part of the “popular” crowd and, although I was in “the” sorority and had many friends, most of those friendships were only within the walls of the school! I was never asked out, so I didn’t date until my senior year, when I refused to go to my sorority formal again without a date, so I asked a guy I thought was cute. He said “yes,” we went, had a great time and saw each other for a few months after, but it never amounted to much and the hole remained. Shortly after high school, I met a guy, we dated, fell in love and got married. Finally, someone actually knew me! The newlywed stage wore off and that hole still longed to be filled. Children came, and although to this day they are my greatest joy in life, there was still something missing! My marriage ended after sixteen years and the hole became a crater!

It was during this season, when I felt I had hit rock bottom and was all alone, that the Lord began to speak to me about my true identity. Guess what I finally realized? My identity wasn’t in having the best duck picture (although it was amazing, especially for a kindergartner); it wasn’t about finding a husband or even making a home with beautiful children. My true identity is in Christ and, regardless of the lies of the enemy, He hoped I’d continue to believe, I am famous … famous in my Heavenly Father’s eyes. He made me, He knows me, and He loves me just the way I am.

But whoever loves God is known by God. ~ 1 Corinthians 8:3 (NIV)

And the best news of all? This is true for YOU as well! So on those hard days when you’re feeling like you don’t quite measure up, you need look no further than above because YOU, sweet sister, are KNOWN by your Heavenly Father! Say this sentence out loud and claim it over your life every day…

My name is (fill in the blank) and I am KNOWN by God!

You are what God says that you are!  You are enough!
