Psalm 23:2-3 “He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.”
When I read this Psalm, I think of “the quiet” — the stillness that is found when spending time with the Lord. He lays us down in green pastures and leads us into still waters to replenish our soul. Therefore, He renews us. He renews us “in the quiet.”
A few months back I wrote a song about what I experience when I’m with the Lord “in the quiet.” This is the first song I’ve ever fully written by myself without any guidance from mentors, and it is special to me because these lyrics perfectly display the intimacy that I feel when I’m still with the Lord. There’s a verse in my song that says, “In the Quiet when I close my eyes, all I see is you, all I feel is you.”
What’s really beautiful to me about that verse is that when we enter into the stillness of the Lord, we become “one” with God. When we invite God into our lives, He’s in control. Where we go, He goes. Where He takes us, we follow.
It’s like the game “Follow the Leader.” In that game we’re constantly on the lookout for what the leader is going to have us do. That’s the way it should be with our relationship with God. Our first instinct when God tells us to do something should be to immediately obey.
When I hear God’s voice, it’s like I’m hearing my first love for the first time.
Everything around me stops. It’s just me and Him. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s not always clear when the Lord speaks, but there’s beauty in having the eagerness to listen even when it’s not crystal clear.
I love it when people describe their first moments when seeing their spouse for the first time. One of my close friends who was recently married describes her feeling when seeing her husband when she says, “When I see him, he’s the only man that stands out. It’s like I’m seeing him for the first time all over again.” Isn’t that beautiful? That’s how I feel when God speaks to me. I want to fall more in love with His voice to the point I never stop listening.
Recently, I’ve gone through a hard season of facing “the unknown.” I’ve lost friends and have gained some others in the process of moving from one state to another. One thing I’ve learned through all of these changes is that God is always there with open arms to hold me and comfort me. He’s always there to replenish me and show me that I’m loved. When I enter into the presence of God, it feels like a big bear hug of love.
As you finish reading this, I’d like you to speak truth over your life and invite the love of God to “hug” you.
Speak 1 John 4:16-17 over yourself. “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the Day of Judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.”
In doing this, you are declaring greater love and confidence in The Lord. These two things are key factors in getting intimate with the Lord.
If you don’t have love or confidence in your relationships or friendships, you aren’t able to get close to them; you aren’t able to get vulnerable. That’s exactly how it is with the Lord. Break off those barriers between you and the Lord. Let Him in, and get to that vulnerable place.
There is someone reading this right now that has barriers of fear and conviction. This is holding you back from getting close with the Lord. You’re wondering why you haven’t been able to hear Him lately. This is for you. He loves you with open arms. Break those chains and let Him in fully. He loves you and accepts you. ~ Lauren
