I have traveled down the painful road of rejection. Perhaps you have ridden down the same road a time or two or maybe you are there now. It’s emotionally devastating because it strikes us at our most vulnerable spot, our sense of self-worth.
We all long to be loved and accepted. But when you hear these words from the one you gave your heart to, “I don’t love you anymore and I don’t think I ever did.” When your co-workers talk behind your back, and then one of them says to you, “It would be better for me if you didn’t work here.”
When you try to fit in, but just don’t quite measure up because you don’t look, do or say the right things it makes you feel less than. The proverbial fifth wheel, never feeling like you belong and having no worth at all.
If you are struggling with the pain of rejection and feeling like you don’t matter at all, I want to share with you what I have learned along the way and how valuable to God you are.
All of us are familiar with sparrows. They are everywhere and are the most insignificant bird around, with their dull brown coloring and unexceptional characteristics. Cats love to eat them. Boys have been known to torment them. Some people consider them pests when they build nests around their homes.
In the time of Jesus, the sparrow was the smallest bird used in offerings and sold for the lowest valued coin in the Roman Empire. So insignificant were these little birds that if you bought four sparrows, the seller would throw in one more free. That meant the fifth sparrow was worthless.
In God’s eyes, no one is insignificant! Not even the fifth sparrow who had no value.
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7
This world can tell you that you are a nobody headed nowhere. Maybe you are feeling like the worthless fifth sparrow, but there are no worthless fifth sparrows with God. Every person has great value and worth to Him. You are somebody to Him.
You are of such great worth to God that He was willing to pay the highest price in the universe to redeem you. “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold … but with the precious blood of Christ” 1 Peter 1:18,19
For me to get off the road of rejection and rid myself of feeling “less than” I have to believe what God says about me more than what others say about me.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10
Trust His love. He cares for you.
