To Whom Do You Give the Glory?

Don’t we as women absolutely love it when someone praises or complements us on a job well done? Or how about when someone raves at what a beautiful home we’ve made or tells us how proud we should be of the fine children we’ve raised (or are raising)? These things are so nice to hear, but we all need to be mindful of who truly is the giver and provider of all things!

In reading through The Word this week and particularly focusing on the story of Deborah, God kept bringing the issue of pride to my thoughts.

imageIn a day where women were not usually exalted to positions of leadership, Deborah was not only a prophet of the almighty God, but she was also the only female judge at that time. God spoke to her and she was faithful to relay His message. In the book of Judges, we learn that Deborah went into battle having been told “the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman”. God was faithful to this promise as the life of Sisera, the enemy’s leader, was in fact taken by a women, but not by Deborah. How easy it would have been for Deborah to take credit for the win, after all, God did speak to her and she was there. But did she? No, she was faithful to point the finger back to God and give Him all the glory.

I wouldn’t consider myself a prideful person at all, but God surely spoke to me through Deborah’s story. How often do we as Christian women do things “in” His name, but find ourselves getting caught up in the job, the project, the task? I absolutely love all things creative! I love serving, entertaining, hosting, giving, crafting, etc. and I’d like to think I’m pretty good at it. I’m often complimented on a beautiful tablescape or a pretty handmade card or craft. In those moments, it’s easy to let my flesh take over and get a big head because “I did that”! But did I? At the end of the day, I was created by our Father and He designed me with these gifts. I am just a vessel to share them with others around me. In these moments, he gently reminds me that we as Christ followers are to do all things for His glory!

Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. ~ Psalm 115:1

The problem comes in when we as Christian woman let pride enter into the picture and begin to take credit that really belongs to the Lord! He reminds us in His word … “I can do ALL things through Christ, who gives me strength.”  In other words, He is the author of all things and the one who equips and gifts us. So, as women of God, let’s go out today and do something in His name, always directing the praise, glory and honor back to Him. He delights in the praise of his servants and will richly bless those who do good works in His name!
