For those of us who have experienced loss, whether it be the loss of a loved one, job, end of a relationship or even health, Christmas can be the most miserable time of year. You live in the emotions of Christmas past and lose the joy of Christmas present. I know first hand the painful experience of losing a loved one. I know the loss of a relationship and all the pain that brings. One Christmas you are with them and the next Christmas they’re gone. I have listened to others tell of all they are doing, and the lists they make of the gifts they will buy and the food they will prepare. And the one line I hear every year, Are you ready for Christmas? A lot of times I would have liked to have said, I am ready for it to be over. But somewhere in all the emotional pain of Christmas past I will think of Jesus, and the joy of Christmas will fill my heart once again because His love will reach down and draw me close to Him.
Over seven hundred years before Jesus was born Isaiah told us Jesus was coming and the names His character would reflect. For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
I find it striking Isaiah lists five names of Jesus and being a number’s person I know the number five represents God’s grace. All of these names represent the full measure of God’s grace reflected in who Jesus would be and is for us. Wonderful is defined in the Hebrew as miracle. I stand in awe of the wonderful miracle of Jesus that he came to us as a child, a baby in human flesh just like we are. While on the earth He experienced all that we do. He knows what it is like to feel every emotion and physical pain we do because He did. He understands and He loved us so much that He gave His life for our sins so we could live. How Wonderful Jesus is!
We all face problems and discouragement. We face things we don’t understand. Friends will fail us, people will reject us and there seems to be no answers for what we are facing. Jesus is our Counselor and in 1 Timothy 2:5 we read, For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. We can go to Jesus and we can be sure He will be there for us to hear the cries of our heart, and He will have the answer. He works everything out for our good because He is always for us.
John 8:58, “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” Jesus came down to this earth and conquered death, hell and the grave for us. He is Mighty God! There are so many demands in this life and we can get tired, weak and weary just living the day to day, but knowing Jesus is Mighty God gives us the strength and courage to live out the life He has called us to live.
Jesus is the Everlasting Father. This reminds me that in Jesus we have a destiny that far outweighs anything this world has. The things that are so hard in this life will one day be over and we will live forever with Jesus. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
In all the trials, chaos, and turmoil we see and go through we can have real peace in Jesus the Prince of Peace. Our lives can be like a storm at sea where above the surface it is violent and everything gets tossed around and there is fear, but far below the surface of the ocean things are calm as if there is no storm at all. There is peace when we go deep with Jesus.
There is joy in Christmas when I think of Jesus! For He is Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.
