By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. Hebrews 13:11
As believers we know when God is involved in the details things do not happen by chance. There are no accidents with God. I remember someone saying to me “There are no coincidences, only God-incidences.”
Of all the citizens of Jericho whom God could have chosen to save from destruction, he chose to save a prostitute? Rahab was a sinner among sinners. And yet the Lord showed mercy to her.
It was no accident that the spies chose Rahab’s house for a place to stay as they observed the situation inside the city walls. Her home was located in the backside of the wall providing them with an escape route if needed but God saw what was truly in Rahab’s heart. The Spirit of God was at work in her house long before the spies showed up because she chose to side with them and not with her own people.
Ephesians 2:8-for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.
“By faith” Rahab and her family were not killed, because she trusted in the one true God. She believed in God and knew what he was capable of. She turned from the Canaanite’s god and believed Yahweh was God alone.
She demonstrated her faith by how she treated the spies. She hid them and lied to protect them. She hoped they would treat her with the same kindness by sparing her family. She wanted a token of faith from the spies that they would keep their word to her. The spies responded,
“We offer our own lives as a guarantee for your safety,” the men agreed. “If you don’t betray us, we will keep our promise and be kind to you when the Lord gives us the land.” (Joshua 2:14).
Because she trusted the God for whom they served she believed their words.
Rahab agrees (verse 21) and she sends the spies on their way to hide in the hills for three days and at the right time, ties the scarlet cord from her window. God rewarded Rahab by giving more than she asked including her as one of the ancestors of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
None of us has slipped so far from God that the Holy Spirit cannot reach us or use us.
Has he called you into obedience? And because of your past you have said. “No, God. Not me. You don’t know what I’ve done.” It’s no accident God has chosen you. God wants to take you out of the darkness and bring you into the light. Step out in faith. Once He fixes your story He will use your story as an example to someone who is going through the same situation. He has more in store for us than we can ever imagine.
Give your life to God. He can do more with it than you can.
