Nameless & Shameless

The most trouble I ever got into, as a small child was a result of boredom, so much that I remember it nearly fifty years later.

This day my sisters and I had gone with our parents to the farm. Mom fixed a picnic and we played in the shade of a tree line most of the day; make-believe games like school and house. We entertained ourselves all afternoon while our parents worked. UNTILL…late that afternoon, out of boredom and a desire to find water to make mud pies; we found our way to a little creek close by with only inches of water in it. Somehow…one of us slid in which became an open invitation for my sisters to join me.

We wallowed like piglets playing in this goopy, cool mud.   Much fun and an hour later our mom checked on us, we were covered from head to toe. To say that we were in trouble was an understatement! She pulled us out of the ditch, loaded us in the pickup, and yelled at us all the way to grandmother’s house.1c8653ea4e947ea99078b95c670357ff

The details get a little fuzzy here, but I remember Mama Chisolm ever so gently washing the mud off of us. I can only imagine the mess. I do remember sitting in her bathtub and in her tender voice she asked, why did you do it?

“We were bored.”

Idle hands are the devil’s workshop; Proverbs 16:27a

Potiphar was the Pharaoh’s Commander-in-Chief having supreme control of the military, probably referred to as Commander Potiphar. AND of course he had a trophy wife, Mrs. Potiphar. What a piece of work she was!71b9d9a9-daea-4ec3-808b-da57ed6a5431

The Bible doesn’t tell us her name; only that she was quite blatant about what she wanted…Rachel and Jacob’s man-child, Joseph.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” Genesis 39:6b-7

Most likely Mrs. P was bored. I mean, how many times in one week can you get another pedicure? In her boredom, she took notice of this hunk of a Brad Pitt looking slave that her husband put in charge…in his absence mind you.

I can see it now…she is lying around eating bonbons while her maidens waited on her hand and foot, bored. How could she not think about this stud that her husband brought into their home? It wasn’t her fault that her husband was gone so much. After all, she was a woman with real needs!

The fact that Joseph had turned her down for eleven years now, only made it a challenge she wasn’t willing to let slip through her hands any longer. She schemed to catch him in a weak moment and draw him into her web. She spent hours a day playing out this Harlequin romance in her head. Ouh la la! Yet every time this Israelite eye-candy said no, she dreamed all the more of how great it was going to be when he gave into her seductions and threw her down to satisfied her needs.

Mrs. P. was not only beautiful, but she was a woman used to getting her way.  She sent all the servants away except Joseph. She positioned herself where he had no choice but to walk in and find her half naked. How could he resist?

Her plot unfolded just as she had planned.

Except…he said no again.

This time she grabbed hold of Joseph’s coat and wouldn’t let go. He jerked away coming out of it and fleeing in only his undergarments.

How dare he!

This time, she would win! If he wouldn’t meet her needs, she would see to it that he would pay.

Rape!

She cried rape and she had his coat to prove it!

How could Commander Potiphar let this go unpunished? No doubt, Mrs. P. was up to her dirty tricks again. But he had no choice; his reputation was at stake.

He sent Joseph to prison.

God has a plan for your life…in place before you were even born. But He gave you the choice. You can seek His plan OR you can make your own plans like Mrs. P.

It doesn’t matter how muddy you have become, Papa God will gingerly wash it all off, making you white as snow.snow-heart

There is nothing that He cannot cleanse you from.
