Can I just go ahead and start this post with praising the Lord for who He is?
I praise His name for His goodness, His faithfulness and His unwavering character and nature. He’s the same yesterday, today and forever!
I really thought I was going to write something completely different on our lady, Sarah. Something either regarding the significance of her name change or how she ran ahead of God, or even regarding what it is to wait on the promises of God; all angles I can relate to personally in one aspect or another. However, as I sat to write, neither flowed from fingers to the keyboard. I’m quite certain it’s because my fellow writers did such a beautiful job conveying what the Spirit had to say regarding those matters.
No, as I sat to write, God brought something quite different to my mind to share; something that I personally needed to be reminded of. That is His grace abounds and His promises are fulfilled; even in the midst of our doubt, disobedience and bitterness. Why?
Because He said it would.
Sarah; the incredibly beautiful Sarah, was chosen to be the mother of the greatest nation in history; blessed by the God of the universe to have that promise fulfilled decades after childbearing years as well as waiting on the promise to come to pass. Hebrews tells us she was the first woman to be listed in the “Faith Hall of Fame.”
I find that quite interesting all things considered.
As we follow her story in Genesis 11-25, we see time and again of Sarah’s recorded doubt in the promise; her impatience and even bitterness when confronted with the results of her own hasty decisions. She even laughs at God Himself when she hears Him say that she will bear Abraham a son, AND He even gives her an exact due date! She LAUGHED at Him! It’s not even till the moment of the birth of her promised son, do we see her dismay and doubt finally break off of her only after she’s holding her promised child in her arms. And she’s the first woman to be listed in the Hall of Faith???? Hello?!?! Anybody else think it’s a stretch to roll her in with the others on that list?
The beauty of her story that has pierced my heart so deeply, her faith was small, and even unstable, but it was all she needed. The word tells us all we need is the faith of a mustard seed. And it wasn’t that faith in the promise that that fulfilled it, it was her faith that He is faithful.
Now I’m not picking on Sarah. Really I’m not. Who could blame her? The woman waited decades on a promise that didn’t happen till she was 90!!! And God only told her Isaac’s due date, the year before! That means for twenty something years, she’s stuck in limbo, waiting. And waiting. And getting older and older.
I myself have a few promises I’ve been waiting on; for a long time. Not decades, mind you, (I’m too young for that! Lol!), but a long time nonetheless. Promises that I know the Lord has made to me. Some days my faith is the size of Texas, while others….not so much. It’s hard to hang in there sometimes.
As each year passes, one can’t help but wonder,
“Did God really say…??? Did He really promise…??? Has He forgotten??? Why hasn’t He done it already???”
And the enemy will take those thoughts and run with them. But even if he does, even when the only faith that seems to be left to cling to has dwindled smaller than a nail head, that’s all that’s needed. God’s promises are unchanging because He is unchanging! His Word is unchanging.
Our faith isn’t in the promises, it’s in the One who made them.
He is never late and He never fails. No matter how long it takes, He is worthy of our praise. He’s a God who still blesses even in the midst of our doubt.
What a wonderful God!
