“But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;” 1 Corinthians 12:7-8
I’m taking a different approach to this week’s topic. Because I’ve gotta believe I’m not the only person in the world who’s struggled with having this particular spiritual gift.
Until VERY recently, I didn’t understand what the difference was between the gifts of knowledge and of prophecy. It’s my understanding and personal experience, that many people that have one of these gifts, tend to have the other as well, one being the more dominant. And if you’re like me, never having been certain what the difference between them are, it can be extremely frustrating. I found it to be more of a burden than gifts since I had the two confused to be the same. Usually, leaving me feeling confused and at a complete loss of what to do with the gifts and information they provided.
Upon writing this series of Gifts of the Spirit, is when my understanding started to unfold; because I finally was at a place where I had to study these gifts and what exactly the Word has to say about them. I’ve actually already laid it out pretty simply in my previous post “She Prophesied Over My Daughter.” The main thing I’ve learned is when God gives me a word of knowledge regarding something or someone, I’m only to release it at His prompting. Until then, my only response needs to be prayer; which happens to be the most powerful response.
The other problem I had regarding these gifts, started much earlier in life; BEFORE I ever even knew we’re given gifts of the spirit.
I grew up in a very traditional church, one that didn’t believe in these gifts. Even though the bible doesn’t say anything of the sorts, they believe the gifts died out with the last of the apostles. Since that’s what I was taught, it proved to be a bit of a conundrum for me. I knew I had the ability to “know” things, but was taught that anyone claiming those abilities were actually in cahoots with the devil. You know, psychics, fortune-tellers, mediums, etc. All the stuff the bible commands not to mess with.
Uh Oh! I certainly didn’t wanna be counted in that category! So where did that leave me? Unfortunately, it left me silent and confused for a very long time. At least until I came to understand truth and the fact that what I had was in fact a few spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit. I found relief in this once I had the revelation that my ability wasn’t evil, but actually of God. But even in that, it left me with questions. What’s the difference between my gifts and the abilities the word warns against? Bet some of you have wondered too! Well, here’s the answer:
It’s NOT because those abilities aren’t real, THEY ARE! Sure there’s plenty of fakes out there, but many who claim to have them, actually do. The difference is satan, in true enemy form, has perverted the gifts they were given.
God has given us each different gifts, which are only meant to be filtered through the the Holy Spirit, intended for His purposes at His prompting. If not guided into this understanding, there in lies the potential for the enemy to corrupt them into something unholy and twists things around. Just as he attempts to twist anything the Lord does. Like he twisted God’s words when tempting Eve. Remember? “Did God really say…..?”
Here’s the truth about this gift:
I am not a crystal ball, I am not a psychic nor a fortune-teller. I can’t give you the winning lotto numbers or tell you your future on demand. That’s not how God intends this gift to be used.
I am a child of God, blessed by the Holy Spirit with a gift that only He can give and I surrender and submit that gift to Him alone. I hear only what my Father tells me and I say only what I hear Him say; following only the prompting of His Spirit.
I pray this helps whoever else out there may be confused about the gift you’ve been given. It is a gift.
