“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:4
I am writing from the book of Ruth on the character of a lost sheep or perhaps a prodigal daughter… a woman named Orpah.
Quick summary on Orpah’s biblical character; one of the two daughter in laws of Naomi, one named Ruth and the other Orpah. Both Ruth and Orpah were from the same city and spiritually lost land of Moab known for its heathen ways of living and idolatrous lifestyles, worshipping false Gods. In Moab, Satan ruled the land as god of this world. He had blinded the people of this city and hardened their hearts to the truth of The One True God. Just as Satan continues his confusion and evil today, he was tempting and taunting their lustful eyes, hearts, and minds… tormenting with temptation of quick fixes and hedonistic highs from false pleasures and temporary worldly gains.
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything…”says the Lord. Exodus 20:3
Naomi’s sons, Mahlon and Chilion were believers of The One True God, Jehovah, but chose to marry Moabite women of the idolatrous land of Moab. But, what Satan intends for harm, God can use for His GOOD! Because these wives had been exposed to The Glory Light and The Gospel spoken over them by their husbands, their hearts had been primed to recieve God’s grace and will for their lives. With His powerful hand covering their unguarded hearts, God spoke over both Ruth and Orpah meeting them at their different levels of spiritual maturity. He allowed them to make their own choice in claiming their destinies. Ruth chose a path of righteousness and commitment and Orpah detoured down a path that would send her back into her old ways of a flesh driven lifestyle.
“For behold, darkness will cover the earth And deep-darkness the peoples; But the LORD will rise upon you And His glory.” Isaiah 60:2
God will help each of us reach our full potential through the varying paths of our journeys and supernatural experiences. We are all capable of becoming purposed as individual carriers of His light even as sinners in need of grace and forgiveness along the way. As in Orpah’s case, she chose to leave her team of three, alongside Ruth and Naomi, all to seek the “better life” in the idolatrous city of Moab. And from the information given in the bible, we don’t know the ending to her story. As I read this, I felt a wave of compassion for Orpah’s restless heart. Perhaps her choice was driven by never having experienced God on the level Ruth had experienced Him. Or perhaps God had decided that Orpah would carry His Light into Moab’s darkness without her even realizing the true nature of the pull on her rebellious heart. But “Holy is The Lamb” and all it takes is the faintest radiant flicker of the Glory Light to dispel the darkness. So, in my own ending for Orpah, I choose to believe that when she arrived back in Moab her face still glimmered from the Magnificent Light that she had been exposed to in the later part of her life. And maybe some broken Moabite’s soul saw Orpah’s faint radiance and recognized it as God’s Presence amongst the sinners! God wants to save His people and He can use even the faintest/dimmest of Manifested Light to do so…. the face of a sinful woman. Selah!
“Turn from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.” Pslam 34:14
“And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness–secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.” Isaiah 45:3
