I feel suffocated, absolutely overwhelmed. Not because I’m trapped in an elevator, or because of the stuffy humid air in Alabama, and not even because I’m stuffed under all my blankets trying to ignore the overbearing weight of my responsibilities. I’m suffocated by media, I’m overwhelmed because when I try to escape my own thoughts with a little television or some YouTube, I’m bombarded with ads that say, “You need this, your skin will radiate like the sun, and your face will drip with sweet honey that will lure all your enemies to inevitable death because of how much more beautiful you will be.” Okay, so maybe I’m being overdramatic, but between all the drop dead gorgeous models on television, and the amount of ads that tell me this mascara will finally fix my stiff as a board lashes, I get extremely overwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some good mascara and a poppin’ matte liquid lipstick, but when did we get so far in this hole of ‘beauty?’ When did all we ever start thinking about was the way we look to others?
I‘ve heard like, a bajillion times, that beauty is only skin deep. But what does that mean? That beauty is superficial? That beauty is only what lies on the surface? When did the word beautiful get limited to something so shallow? When did we forget the deeper meaning of what it means to be beautiful?
As many of you know, I’m a beauty enthusiast myself, I have an entire YouTube channel dedicated to makeup, and beauty products, but it’s also dedicated to inner beauty. My channel statement says the following:
Hi guys! For a long time I have felt called to the beautiful family that is YouTube. This channel is a safe place to celebrate our differences. As a servant of God, I feel it is crucial to spread His word, His love, and His kindness to those around me. It’s time for the now generation to rise up, and not only take over the Nation, but take over the world with our own, original, innovative, and unique ideas. Let’s be a channel that YouTube has yet to see, let’s not only fill our makeup bags with beauty, but our minds and our soul as well. Let’s strive to grow together, to own one another’s ideas, and to encourage those around us to chase their dreams.
I’m not trying to toot my own horn by any means. But this is the beauty I want in the world. I crave to see people who are beautiful because of what lies inside of them, because of their hearts and souls. My sweet friends, beauty goes far beyond skin deep. Psalm 139:23 says, “Search me, God, and know my HEART…” God doesn’t look at the outward appearance of His children, He looks at the heart.
“Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” – Kahlil Gabran
If beauty is a light in the heart like Kahlil says, then beauty is Jesus. Since John 8:12 tells us that Jesus is the light of the world. It’s funny how everything we dig into in the word can be summed up in one simple statement – Be like Jesus. When we have Jesus in our hearts, we contain the rarest form of beauty imaginable. It’s a beauty that radiates, that truly does invite people in, it’s a beauty that overflows and shows others their own beauty, it’s a beauty that has impact. In case no one has told you lately, or ever, you are far more beautiful than you know. Despite your appearance, or your circumstances, God will only ever see you as beautiful. -Arrianna
