“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
There was once a time when confidence wasn’t my strong suit. Truth be told, there are still some days where in certain situations or circumstances, I tend to lack it. I’m fairly certain that this can be said for everyone. For many, I imagine, it’s seen as an attribute that’s only reserved for some: the bold, distinguished, popular, strong, brave, talented, educated, wealthy, and any other group of people you can think of that fit in that list. At least this is how I used to see it. It wasn’t something for me; I wasn’t any of those things or kinds of people.
But here’s the deal, my perception of what confidence is was all wrong, as I believe most people’s are. One of the things I’ve learned, is what confidence ISN’T. For example, it’s not popularity, it’s not talent, it’s not wealth, boldness, strength, bravery, education, etc. Those are just some results of confidence. I’ve also realized that it’s not arrogance, although they’re often confused. But of all the things I’ve learned that it ISN’T, the most important would be that confidence isn’t self nor others reliant.
Thankfully, I’ve learned what confidence IS. It’s actually a gift. One that can only be given by God. See, it’s not anything we can develop on our own or get from another person. Anything remotely resembling it, if from ourselves, we’ll realize is temporary. No, confidence is only something we can get from Him because it’s nothing to do with us. In truth, there isn’t anything in our human self that has anything to be confident about. However, it’s everything to do with Him. It’s Him IN us that gives us reason to be confident. He’s made us, and designed every one of us to do great things for His glory, should we choose to accept Him and allow Him to do those great things.
Confidence is both trust and a choice. It’s choosing, every day, in all circumstances to trust the Lord with your life and all He’s called you to be and do. It’s choosing to trust Who He is within you and therefore, who you are in Him. It’s choosing to trust that He’s equipped you for every challenge you’re faced with, and provision for every need. It’s knowing that He is your source, your protector and healer. Nothing by your hands or anyone else’s can compare. It’s trusting Him in others that are around you; the people you’re called to do life with, knowing that none of it is by accident since He knows every tiny detail of your life.
Confidence is faith in action. It’s stepping out of your comfort zone with an assurance that God your Father will either catch or carry you. Either way, it will be beautiful. It’s faith that He will make good on every promise He has given, in abundance. No matter how long it takes, He’s always on time.
There are many things in my life right now that I couldn’t do, couldn’t face or even survive if I didn’t have the confidence that only He can give me. There are chapters of my life still being written that’s full of question marks, prayers and promises yet to be answered or fulfilled, relationships yet to be restored; and yet, I have complete confidence that I couldn’t author any of it better than He.
He holds my life, all of our lives, in His hands. He only has good things for His children and we can rest in the confidence that He won’t give us anything less. I am confident; not because of who I am, but because of Who He is, and Who He is in me.
I pray you are able to experience this same confidence, accepting no substitute. ~ Heather
