No Comparison, I Surpass Them All

When I was first assigned my verses for the Proverbs 31 woman series, I had no idea what or even how I was going to write on this.  Because as you read about this larger-than-life woman, any other member of our gender can’t help but feel completely inferior in every way if this is who we’re measured against. It had been a pretty rough week for me when I got my assignments. Epic fail at mom, wife, friend, sister, daughter, leader, etc.  At least that’s how I felt, and therefore I was the least qualified to write on this series topic.

How could I write anything on this woman that I couldn’t possibly compare to in the slightest bit? No where in these verses does it mention that she hastily retreats to her water closet in times of distress to hide from the world and cry until she’s dehydrated! And if this woman ever did experience tearful distress, I’m sure she did that with all the grace, elegance and flawlessness too!!!!

I’m nothing like this pillar of estrogen perfection and it’s so painfully obvious! But I can name at least 10 other women that I think fit the bill exactly!

Thankfully, my pity party week passed. Once I could focus again on Him, and redirected my thoughts back to His truth, He gave me a beautiful epiphany! Several, actually; which I’ve already written about earlier in the series. This one however, was the most eye-opening for me and so very specific to today’s verse; the one I felt I was least qualified to write on.

Upon first reading it, my understanding is that there is only one woman that’s this amazing. Only one that no one else can hold a candle to.  And the epiphany He gave me….is that’s true. The beautiful part about that is ITS ME!!!

No, I’m not declaring myself The Proverbs 31 woman in carnet. What I’m saying is that there is no one else who can hold a candle to me, in my home, to my husband, my children, my job, my family and my life. Because ONLY I am ordained and chosen by God to be the woman in this time and place to these people and these tasks that He has set before me. There is no other who could do MY life assignment better.

img_3971The same is true for every woman; every person for that matter! No one else is more suited for YOUR life assignment. If there were, He wouldn’t have entrusted it to you. The problem is we compare ourselves to anyone else who we think seems to be doing it better or has it all together. Truth is we don’t know what trials and failures others had to walk through to get to the point they’re at now. The point we compare ourselves to.

Comparison is a tactic of the enemy to distract us from our purpose, our life assignment in an attempt to have us fail. Comparing ourselves to others and even the very misunderstood Proverbs 31 woman prevents us from reaping the joy, blessings and beauty of our life and every aspect of it.

God designed each of us individually and knew our lives before He created the universe. He knows our every strength and weakness. He knows our desires to be better than we are and His heart breaks when He sees us comparing the very lives He gave us or even wishing we WERE someone else, instead of recognizing our own greatness and value.

The key to embodying this Proverbs 31 concept, isn’t to measure yourself against these verses in an exhausting attempt to BE her, or anyone else.  Rather, do what you can to the best of your own ability with excellence as you know how, and in doing this, accept the truth that you ARE her! We have to choose to recognize that it’s enough. Part of choosing to do our best is purposing to live according to the One who gave us our life assignments. God isn’t expecting us to do everything perfectly, but rather, PASSIONATELY with grace.  So that’s exactly what I’m doing now.  I encourage you to do the same.  There is freedom here. ~ Heather

  1. Heather! This was amazing! Just what I needed to hear as I send my last one off to college wondering if she was properly prepared. Thank you for reminding me not to compare. No one else can be the wife, mother, daughter, friend or co-worker that I am. Thank you. And it was written so very well!

  3. I love this post Heather!! I often fall into the “comparison trap.” Thank you for showing me another truth to speak over myself when the enemy sets his trap…”I surpass them all!” πŸ’œ
