Mighty Luminaries

Acts 21:8-9

Philip the evangelist was known as “one of the seven” in Acts 6, a well-known devout disciple. Wherever his travels took him he was preaching Christ. Whether in the city of Samaria (Acts 8: 5-40), or traveling with a eunuch from Jerusalem to Ethiopia or on his way to Caesarea. So it is no wonder his four daughters, known simply as “Philip’s Daughters”, desired to worship and serve God as their father did.

At the day of Pentecost, they saw with their own eyes the power of the Holy Spirit. After having the Holy Spirit come upon them they were blessed with the gift of prophesy. What is prophesying? Prophesying is giving the word of God, not only current teachings but predictions about the future. You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Women, I’m not sure about that?” Well let me put your mind to rest. Joel had prophesied spiritual gifts given to both sexes. Yes. This includes sons and daughters (Joel 2:28-32). If you look at Acts 2:17-20 Peter basically states the same thing- “daughters shall prophesy.” Don’t you just love it? All God’s children. Every man and woman has been blessed with spiritual gifts. Our God leaves no one out. We all have a purpose.

Philip’s daughters’ followed the Lord using the gifts the Holy Spirit had given them. They traveled with their father on missionary journeys, preached to woman and assisted with the baptism of women converts. They had a special place in the early church, using their gift freely to explain the word of God to those who listened. An early Christian writer, Eusebius described the daughter’ as “great lights’ or “mighty luminaries.” A luminary is a person who inspires or influences others or could also refer to an artificial light. For me, it was and still is a light at the end of the tunnel that allows me to find my way through the darkness. Let me explain. Below is an expert from my own person journal.luminary

Dear God: Before I go on, I must (say) write this. Thank you for the “banner” in the sky and the “iron skillet” over my head. Today at the office, I was on the phone with customer service. Her name is Rene. She was the icing on my day today and I told her that. While I called for claim information I got something far better. She gave me a word from God. I don’t know her or have seen her-but a few moments of the phone in to our conversation (about God, hearing from you, etc) she said she had a word from God to me. I’m paraphrasing- I won’t be at two jobs forever and the way he is working it out I won’t expect. That got my attention. Just when I thought you’ve forgotten me-you speak to me through someone I’ve never met or talked to before. You use people I didn’t expect. I’m so excited to see what each new day brings.

My challenge to you: When God, by faith whispers something to you don’t keep it to yourself-give it away while you have it to give (Proverbs 3:27-28). You just might be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Your Turn:  Have you ever needed a light to be shown into your life?  Have you ever had some God-light you felt prompted to share with someone?  We would love for you to Share your story in ‘Leave a Reply’ below. ~ Tonya
