Today’s Feature Writer ~ Cindy Willingham

Thirty-seven years ago I married the most amazing man. I was way too young and he was way too handsome. Our happily ever after has certainly had a few bumps in the road, but it has made us into the couple that we are today. (We now call those heated discussions, growth opportunities. 😉

Life was good. I had married my sweetheart. We had two children, a boy and a girl. We had a nice home, complete with a picket fence. I was a stay-home mommy and life couldn’t be happier…on paper. The truth is there was a void, something that I didn’t have. Being raised in church, I knew that was where I needed to start. I took our children each week and I got involved, thinking I could do enough to make God like me. I didn’t know that God loved me just as I am. He stands at the door of my heart and is the only one who can fill that longing void.

Our children grew up and went to college and I decided to go back to school too, leaving Charles with three in college at the same time. I started at the community college in horticulture and transferred to Mississippi State in landscape architecture. LA’s design the space between the buildings. And I loved it!

By two thousand seven I had jumped through all the hoops of academia and they gave me a degree. It was a big celebration of a journey long lived. Our daughter and son-in-law gave us a grandson that same year. I claimed my grandmother name as Honey and promptly fell in love with the cutest baby boy!

The Willinghams Fall of 2015

I was offered a great job in Birmingham, Alabama. We moved and began finding our way around. Since then, our family has grown beautifully. Our son and his wife added two granddaughters with another scheduled to join us in the spring for a total of four grand babies! They are so much fun!I could end there by saying; The rest is history…or We rode off into the sunset! But it really isn’t the end. I still had that void. We began attending Church of the Highlands, finding that the void really can be filled. We met the Holy Spirit and fell in love with God. Jesus became real in our lives. We joined a small group and got to know people.

We all need community. Our church really isn’t that big if you discover small groups. It makes big church small. Not a Sunday goes by that I don’t get more than a few hugs from women I have connected with through small groups. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Because I allowed God to fill the void that He put in me, I can hardly wait to see what He has for me next. This has been an incredibly beautiful journey!

Blessings my friend. ~ Cindy
